What is a winch used for on a dragger boat?

Writing a book and need a little information about the dragger boat and the purpose of the winch and boom (I believe). Basically need to understand how something could go wrong to create a scenario where poor standard on the boat leads to a head injury

You need a bigger boat... dagger boards are only used in light weight smaller sailing vessels such as dinghies... In this case, there is no boom (or horizontal swing) that would cause any head injury...

There isn’t anything I think is more reviving than the scent of salt air along with the echo of the waves crashing against a rocky beach. Because I am a fervent angler, I rest assured that my sea fishing tackle box is always full and set. You never know when a fishing trip will come up!
