Paul Breece is a tattoo artist and piercer in Indianapolis. Like artists working in any medium, he has an abiding appreciation for the working craft of others. Paul had ridden stockish Triumphs and an Ironhead in factory livery, but was always on the lookout for some sort of rigid ride. About two years ago he traded his Trump for a down-at-the-heels ’99 Sporty in a Smoking Gun frame. The lines weren’t quite there, the T-bars were out of square by about 1½ inches, and the paint was bubbling up. On the positive side it had a strong-running, non-smoking 1,200 mill, good title, and decent wheels. It was a chopper, but just. The bike had a history of being sold and traded locally half a dozen times. It suffered from being abortively cobbled by the previous owners, each leaving his King-Midas-in-reverse touch on the Sporty. Paul tooled around the neighborhood for a while, never taking it for much more than bar hopping or a quick ride with friends. As he would later find out, he was lucky to make it that far.
