Pinoys remain faithful Catholics in Finland

HELSINKI - When asked how she preserves her Catholic faith in Finland, one of the most atheist countries in the Nordics, Joan Bondad calmly says, “by going to Church every Sunday and observing the sacraments.”

Joan’s mother, 70-year-old Susan Bondad, who hails from San Pablo City, brought Joan to Finland when she was seven years old.

“I came here in 1989, 21 years ago,” Susan said. Today, all of Joan’s five siblings, their families, and her father, with the exception of a sister in Australia, now live in Finland. Susan worked as a cleaner while she, after finishing her studies, works at the telecom company, Nokia.
