Norwegian fiddler Annbjørg Lien is primarily known to Scottish audiences through her appearances with popular Celtic Connections attractions String Sisters, where she showed her ability to blend in with Shetland, Scottish, Irish and American music as well as drawing her colleagues into her own tradition. Something of the String Sisters influence stays with her here as she looks both close to home and further afield, venturing into Middle Eastern and Indian tones and metres while also playing what sounds like Norwegian court music, singing a distinctly Irish-flavoured title track and getting down with some exuberant, emphatic grooving. If Dancing Larry has the kind of bright melody that String Sisters thrived on, its successor, Den Størsted Daarlighed, coins a new genre, Norwindian, as Indian praise song, flute, tablas, Norwegian ballad and Nordic jazz saxophone merge into music that sums up the album's success as a natural collaboration. On the first few plays and in the nicest possible way, you just don't know what's coming next.
