In exceptionally good condition this set of coin weights are marked the same on both sides with the weight in pennyweights (D) and grains and also on one side only with the official assay mark, two being the crown mark of the Stamper of Money Weights and the third being the coffee pot or ewer mark of the Founders Company. The latter mark was much older and, as this is on the smallest weight which was for the 1/4 guinea, a very rare gold coin which was only ever minted in 1718 and 1762, this weight may be a little older than the other two, although it matches them in every other respect. annular or ring marks giving the weight and lion passant typical of the late 18th century. The “assay” mark of the lion was actually not an official assay mark – at this time goldsmiths who produced these weights would add such a mark to make them look official.
